Description

Actual title: "Gesellenstück"

Hey folks,

so yeah, this is what we call a "Journeyman piece".... or something... it's a tradition in Germany, don't know if it exists in any other countries (maybe Austria and Switzerland too, but I don't know)
I used to be a carpenter apprentice and part of the final exam is "Plan, draw and build your own piece of furniture" or for others it would be a door or a window...
But I learned how to build furniture so I had to build something like that.
There is lots of room to be creative, but:
- it has to be build within 100 hours
- its front shouldn't be smaller than 1m²
- it should have a door with a lock
- it should have a drawer made out of solid wood with dovetail joint (Schwalbenschwanzzinkung), no metal runners!
- some other shit I don't remember...
Oh and the drawing of this piece has to be a technical drawing on a sheet of paper that measures 84x119 cm (33x47 inches)

Buuuuuuutttttt...
This thing here is 161 cm high, 139.5 cm wide and 76 cm deep.
In other words: around 63 inches high, 55 inches wide and 30 inches deep... approximately...
It's mostly flake board with veneer, but a lot of parts are solid wood, too.
Mostly american cherry tree wood. But the door and the other dark thing is ziricote veneer.
On my drawer I used a more difficult joint, the japanese- or devils-dovetail joint.
The dark panel on the right, where the pictures are, is magnetic. I glued the ziricote veneer on a metal plate. Put some self-made cherry-wood-magnets and pictures of a sassy lady and a tapir on as demonstration.
The upper shelf inside the cabinet (behind the door) can be pulled out.
The whole furniture can be detached into 4 parts, basically: the left upper rack-part, the magnet-part, the cabinet-part with the door and the thing on the lower right with the glass drawing surface.

Phew...

I could give you A LOT MORE technical data on this baby...
Let's just say that I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
There are people who build some crazy shit as a Gesellenstück!
You can see one in the background on the picture where I am standing, a rubik's cube inspired one.
But I talked to the girl who made it and she told me all the things that went wrong in planning and building... and that it's actually not as practical...
I just wanted to build something that's useful to me.
And I succeeded.
I'm pretty happy with it!
